Tatami room with open shoji looking onto a garden

A small ryokan of eight rooms on a lane in Higashiyama, a short walk from the temples at dawn.

The gate is easy to miss. Inside, a stone path, a lantern, a maple that the gardener has been shaping for thirty years. Each room looks onto a sliver of garden.

Dinner is kaiseki, served in your room, and the menu changes when the season does. In the morning, rice cooked in an earthenware pot and grilled fish, and a walk to the temples before they open.
