Kyoto at 7am belongs to the monks and the gardeners. We will get you there at 6:45.
Kyoto is a city of very old things kept in very good order. Moss is swept. Gravel is raked into water. A sweet shop makes one kind of sweet, and has done for eleven generations.
It is also busy, and the people who live here feel it. So we keep to the edges of the day and the edges of the map: a garden at opening, a mountain temple in the north, an evening walk when the day-trippers have gone.
Stay at least four nights. The city opens up on the third morning, once you stop trying to see it all.
