Stays·shukubo·KōyasanPlaceholder

Raked gravel and moss garden with a maple on a foggy day

A working temple on Kōyasan, where you eat with the season and wake to the morning service.

The monks who run Hoshi-no-in also pray here, sweep here and cook here. Your room looks onto a raked garden. The corridors are cold in winter and smell of incense all year.

Dinner is shōjin ryōri: sesame tofu, mountain vegetables, clear soup. At six the bell rings for morning prayers. Join them, or listen from under the covers.
