Wooden steps through a dark, mossy graveyard of old stone monuments

Destinations · Kansai高野山

A town of monasteries on a mountain, where you sleep in a temple and wake to the sutras.

Kōbō Daishi founded his monastery here in 816. Today more than a hundred temples share the plateau, and around fifty of them take guests.

You eat shōjin ryōri, Buddhist vegetarian cooking built on sesame tofu and the mountain’s vegetables. You may join the morning service. Nobody minds if you do not.

In the evening, walk Okunoin, the great cemetery under cedars, where lanterns line the path to the founder’s mausoleum.
