Walk the old post road between two wooden towns, then sleep where the travellers slept.
The Nakasendō linked Edo and Kyoto through the mountains. In the Kiso Valley, stretches of it survive as stone and earth paths through forest, past waterwheels and rice terraces.
The classic walk runs from Magome to Tsumago, about eight kilometres. Tsumago has buried its power lines and banned cars in the day, so at dusk it looks much as it did two hundred years ago.
Your bags travel ahead by courier. You carry water, a snack and nothing else.
