Destinations · Chūgoku広島・宮島
A city that chose to remember, and an island where the shrine stands in the sea.
Hiroshima is a warm, wide, green city, and it asks something of you. The Peace Memorial Museum is not easy. We give it a full morning and nothing loud afterwards.
Across the water, Miyajima holds Itsukushima Shrine on stilts above the tide. At high water the great torii seems to float. At low tide you can walk out to its feet.
Most visitors leave the island by late afternoon. If you stay, you have the shrine, the deer and the lantern-lit shore to yourself.
