Kyushu is Japan’s warm southern island, and it runs on hot water. Beppu steams from a thousand vents. Kurokawa’s inns line a river valley, sharing their baths with one wooden pass.
It is also where Japanese porcelain began. In Arita and Imari, families have fired pots for four hundred years, and many will show you the kiln.
Fewer overseas visitors come this far. The ones who do find generous food, easy people and a slower day.
